sustainability is security
While traveling during the last two months I have been talking to people about this handbasket that we are in; the picture that is developing is it seems that focusing on what to do with the next economic depression and pointing out that sustainability is security
In a few cases people asked quite directly what they should do and my first set of talking points is around intensively localizing the economy which both saves energy and builds up the local infrastructure; the next set of points is about learning permaculture and (then?) grow some of your own food, raising chickens (or ducks)....
What other points should be brought up?

Another point is something that is, I believe, a permaculture idea...
Don't put all your eggs in one basket - don't get one function from only one element. For example, say you grow your own chook fodder - you don't depend on only one source for your chook feed in case it fails. This way you have a plan B and maintain sustainability.
Another example might be everyone develops many skills so they have more than one thing to give to a community. Being multi-skilled can keep you going when a particular skill isn't needed for a time (eg. during a depression), and it increases the likelihood that something you can do for someone can be exchanged for other services, or goods like food, seeds, etc. Its just like every element of a permaculture design should have more than one function - so should a person, which is an element of the design. Having multi-skilled people in a community can reduce the need for 'outsourcing', which will help keep goods and services local (close-by).
