Citgo

By jeremy - Posted on 17 May 2005

In light of the record profits the major US oil companies are making and how much support they are throwing behind the Bush mis-administration might I suggest buying what gas you have to from Citgo. Citgo is a U.S. refining and marketing firm that is a wholly owned subsidiary of Venezuela's state-owned oil company and you can find a local Citgo gas station with this tool (update: only put in City and State, the zipcode search appears to be broken).

By buying what gas you have to from Citgo you sidestep the major oil companies, bypass the force importation of oil from Canada (read: NAFTA), avoid sending any money directly to the client states in the Middle East, and supporting a government that is using the oil profits to to support Venezuela's democratic government efforts to provide health care, literacy and education, and subsidized food for the majority of Venezuelans. Of course minor detail that Bush's buddies tried to overthrow the democratically elected government Venezuela only adds the desire to direct money towards Venezuela and away from Bush co.

Thanks for this. The spousal unit and I don't have a car, but sometimes we have to rent one. When we do that in future, we'll gas it up at Citgo before returning it.

Here in upstate New York I have been using Citgo stations. On a recent trip I took back roads from Ithaca to rural northwest Pennsylvania, and I noticed that about 75% of the gas stations in the small towns I was going through were Citgo. Seems as if the big companies have abandoned the rural consumers in this part of the country. Is it the same elsewhere?

One other benefit that I learned about from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (Canada's much better funded version of NPR): Venezuela, through Citgo, has been selling subsidized heating oil to low-income Americans in North-Eastern states during winter months. If I recall correctly, Philadelphia was expressly mentioned, but I think parts of New York were also receiving this aid. I think the price reduction was around 30% and there was documentation required to qualify. So, Chavez and his government apparently feel that people who need help should receive it no matter where they live, even in countries led by governments who want to overthrow them.
